|How Rewarding Was It?|
Initially, I was given a task on doing a macro research on Soybean, Corn, Palm Oil and the impact of El Nino on production and prices. Doing this research allows me to understand the importance of understanding the industry in great details as well as improving my ability to interpret relevant information. Later, I was assigned to do analysis on palm oil companies by comparing and monitoring their plantation statistics to find the company with the largest growth potential as well as assessing their risk on foreign currency debt. There were many other "small" projects along the way, but much flexibility was given when you are doing your work.
I received a list of questions via email before my interview. The interview went pretty smooth as most of the questions were related to my personality and working attitude. Besides that, there were also several technical questions that was asked.
This internship has given me an insight of what it's like working in a fund management industry. As I was involved in doing macro economy research as well as company specific research, I was able to identify the key components that are pivotal in making investment decisions. Aside from that, this internship has thought me the importance of detailing as it is vital to understand every aspect of an industry/company to improve your decision making.
My supervisor was very supportive. Although she was always busy, she would often take some time off whenever I have any questions. Besides that, she was also very flexible in what I do. I mentioned to her that I would like to learn more about doing company specific research and she gave me an assignment on that.
The one thing I think that could be improved is for the company to give the interns more group work. I believe that working in groups would improve and steepen our learning curves as there will be a constant sharing of idea.
I believe that having time-management skills would be the most important. Always set a deadline for yourself and always finish your work before the deadline. This would definitely improve your time-management skills and allow you to learn as many thing as possible in a short period of time.
