Generally working under Syahredzan Johan under the Litigation Department of the law firm. I was made to understand that my internship scope is to do research and help out in the various cases he takes and other miscellaneous tasks at the firm in between tasks/projects. As he was a rather well known public interest/human rights lawyer aside from his usual litigation work, I had an opportunity to be involved in cases involving the use of the controversial Peaceful Assembly Act and Sedition Act, as well as constitutional cases in regards of the freedom of religion. I also did other things such as following my boss to court, doing some transcribing of interviews and trips to police stations. Besides, there was this case which required a government gazette from the 1930s in which I had to personally search for in public libraries, I thought that was very interesting. (I apologize if the description of my tasks sound rather vague, I am bound by the firm's confidential policy)What did you learn?
Reconfirmed that it is really something that I want to do in the future: Bad laws need to be challenged and rights of all persons needs to be equally upheld. The law is your sword and your shield in the fight against oppression. Was your supervisor supportive?
The support I got from my mentor was not the main source of learning - I learnt most from my research and tasks which I was assigned to, from a hands-on perspective. What could be improved? What could you have done better?
-Advice for future interns?
1. Law students in general. Whatever your reasons are for reading law, you would need to be exposed that the legal profession is more than just another paid-job. And for some, not as easy as it seems. 2. Perhaps law students hoping to make a difference in society during their practice. Valuable lessons from the research and the man himself.
