During my internship, my primary responsibility was to conduct research and analysis on specific areas. The scope of my research ranged from benchmarking exercises, market entry study to technology management. The findings and analysis were used to support the projects that my unit was undertaking at that moment in time. Besides conducting research, there was also minimal grunt work such as preparing PowerPoint slides and compiling data into Excel spreadsheet.A bit about your intenrship interview
The interview questions are mainly CV-based with additional questions on PETRONAS and the oil & gas industry as a whole. What did you learn?
Throughout the internship program, the most transferrable skill that I learned was breaking down big problems into smaller parts in order for my research to be carried out in a more systematic manner. This is because data mining and piling through different materials on the Internet can be quite time-consuming. I also brushed up on my communication skills as I was asked to present my findings to my mentor from time to time. Was your supervisor supportive?
My supervisor was very supportive when I needed some guidance on my projects. He provided constructive feedback in order for me to improve my work. As a whole, my colleagues demonstrated openness and inclusiveness towards everyone including interns as well. They often reached out to the interns with career advices, occasionally inviting us for casual lunch or dinner to share their perspectives. What could be improved? What could you have done better?
As I arrived at the time when the department was pre-occupied with their mid-year review and other projects, the internship was not very well-structured. There were periods where I was really busy and there were periods that I had to take initiatives to ask for some work.Advice for future interns?
Build meaningful relationships with your colleagues as you will need their support for group projects and data sourcing. Given their wealth of experiences, there are plenty of lessons to be learned from them.

I have been assigned to do a Prospect Evaluation Memorandum (PEM) which is a document to acknowledge a prospect for drilling proposal. It is one of the main component in the exploration phase which is to propose for an exploration investment and also as a guidance of a long term strategy plan. In the end, the purpose of oil companies in exploration is to reduce uncertainties and risks. This project is comprehensive as it applies almost all geological and geophysical knowledge learned in university.
One supervisor and one mentor (both Principal Petroleum Geoscientist and Executive Geoscientist) helped in assisting me throughout this project. However, all other staffs were equally helpful.
The project was assessed weekly and classes/tutorials by Technical Experts were held should there any requests and needs for such session. What did you learn?
Everything that a junior Geoscientist should know about. From learning how to conduct tele-conference from town to oilrig to analyzing the upstream petroleum industry in terms of exploration, development and production. Was your supervisor supportive?
100% support on weekly basis. Frequent classes and tutorials to aid in understanding PETRONAS's business through department's role. What could be improved? What could you have done better?
The chance to go offshore should be made available to interns too.Advice for future interns?
Learn as much as you can and try to get to know the staff and ask about their experiences.
