My internship responsibilities included forecasting and understanding the market trends of the price of base oils in the open market. 2. Projects included: a) Compiling pricing data from industry standards, national government energy sources and internal sales data to model the historical fluctuations of the prices of Group I, II and III base oils, Brent crude oil, and 0.05% gas oil. Presented findings to team. b) Represented Petronas in the largest international base oil conference (7th ICIS SEA conference) in Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. Connected with high level executives to expand potential network of customers c) Worked with the Group Head of Supply Chain of PLI to determine if the refinery (MG3) in Melaka should expand its capacity to produce more base oil. Expansion project would cost in excess of RM350m. Performed price comparisons and ROI analysis. What did you learn?
On the question of expectations; yes and no. Yes because I didn't know what to expect in the beginning, and therefore expectations were low. I was given opportunities that wouldn't have been considered in other internships (representing the company in Singapore on a all-expense paid trip, getting to work directly with the Head of Supply Chain in a big project). I also had a great boss who made sure that I learnt in the 2 months. No, because I expected a little more structure in the internship experience. At times, projects were more on an ad hoc basisWas your supervisor supportive?
My mentor tried to ensure that I gained from the internship. What could be improved? What could you have done better?
-Advice for future interns?
Those interested in the Oil & Gas industry, and how its supply & demand trends function - I'd recommend considering an internship here. Those interested in sales and marketing on a large scale may benefit from some of the things that the team does as well.
