Originally it wasn't structured but I managed to force a structured learning for the internship (which is now applied towards new interns, sorry lads). I was given different supervisors every week and I would assist and shadow him/her. Reading and studying related materials when not needed, double-checking works and shadowing meetings. There were several projects that I was temporarily attached to but I didn't have meaningful/impactful work. But that is expected because you have to be qualified to make those decisions when in the engineering discipline. Since I had a lot of supervisors, I had a range from active involvement to reluctant-to-involve-me mentors. What did you learn?
The internship did not meet my expectations. I wanted more but being 'untrained' is a big limitation. My mentors only guided me and I actively learned on my own. Many helped me understand how the upstream oil industry works and the organization politics and culture. As part of the Gen-Y, we hate to admit that politics is an important part of any organization and most of the time it is not because Gen-Y is not capable, it is the bureaucratic nonsense and blanket notions of our generation that prevents us from reaching our potential. In that sense, once you managed to break these notions and gain their trust, you'll be able to learn more. Was your supervisor supportive?
My mentors were mostly attentive and made up for lack of structure with active improvisation. What could be improved? What could you have done better?
Depends on what you want out of the internship: I got most of what I wanted from it. The key is courage and persistence. Many love to talk about their achievements and give gems of advice that they wish they knew.Advice for future interns?
