Internship in ExxonMobil involves different engineering disciplines such as Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical and many more. Since I'm majoring in Chemical Engineering, I was put under Production Project Development for Brownfield Project. There are 2 different kinds of projects in ExxonMobil which are Greenfield project (building new Oil & Gas platform) and Brownfield project (modification of existing Oil & Gas platform). My work is divided into two scope which covers both management and engineering applications. For management, I learn how to review and compile engineering documents, interface between each engineering discipline and deal with different contractors. For the project that I'm involved in, I need to spend most of my time at the contractor's company which is Perunding Ranhill Worley in order to track their work progress and learn many engineering applications. For application of engineering, I learn plenty of design work and modification of drawings. Modifications include most of the systems involved in Oil & Gas platform such as wellhead, surge and pumping facilities, generator fuel gas, chemical injection system and many more. Besides, I need to review all the drawings and documents made by the engineers and give comments. What did you learn?
This internship program opened my mind towards the reality of engineering world. During my first year, my aim is just to become a Chemical Engineer in any Oil & Gas company. But when I got involved in this internship, I found out it is not as easy as that. In Oil & Gas industry, the term Chemical Engineer is too broad. There are instrument engineer, process engineer, project engineer and many more. Now I have a clear picture about my direction as an engineer in Oil & Gas industry. Was your supervisor supportive?
The mentor actively involved me, mostly attentive and ensured I gained from the internship. What could be improved? What could you have done better?
-Advice for future interns?
Internship program in ExxonMobil is suitable for any engineering discipline such as Chemical, Mechanical or Electrical. If you want to have some clear picture about engineering, this is the suitable place. You will learn a lot of things that can't be learned in the class and you can build your connection with the engineers in ExxonMobil and also with other contractor companies.
